The 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo
What convinces an otherwise normal man to be a reenactor and dress up and march around a field, surely there's more dignified ways of commemorating one of the most famous European battles?

They're doing it for WWII now too. During the recently D-Day celebrations, standing alongside real British veterans, there were knobheads dressed up as American GI's. WTF?!

To celebrate what a genius Wellington was.

I'd have to go dressed as Major Richard Sharpe.

As for the loons, they probably look at people who go to football in the same way as we look at them. Different hobbies for different breeds.

Anyone catch the story about France demanding that Belgium scrap that special 1 euro coin they minted to commemorate Waterloo? They complied but reminted a special 1.50 Euro coin to the same design. Haha

I took part in a Sealed Knot battle a couple of times. Used borrowed kit an got taught how to load and fire a musket then spent the evening camping in 1600's style getting pissed on mead and wine...fucking right laugh but its an expensive hobby to maintain.

The place where Wellington camped Le Bois De La Cambre is literally a 10 min walk from my appartment. A beautiful wood with an excellent night club there called Jeux d'Hiver....

Re: The 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo
No disrespect but does anybody else still find it tragically sad to see grown men still taking this so seriously? I mean it was 200 fuckin' years ago!

Since then Britain & France have

1) Created Concorde - The greatest passenger jet airline ever created...unlikely to be bettered in the near future - if ever again.

2) Created Channel Tunnel - I think we all like and respect each other enough to realise that this was a truly great idea for both nations respectively

3) We gave them the Beatles and Stones they gave us New Wave, Jean Paul Belmondo and the finest threads and tailoring around which were the inspiration for our MOD culture

Would it be safe to say that we kissed and made up a long time ago?

;-)

Re: The 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo
Just returning from holiday (waiting for taxi to airport) just finished holiday read "Waterloo" by Benard Cornwell an excellent read based on commentaries of those involved. Griping stuff even when you know the outcome. Seems we just scraped in the winners and it was a real touch and go affair. All down to the efficiency of British Guards and the Prussian just getting to attack the French right flank in time. Overall bloody slaughter on both sides. But the winners right history.

eusebiovic, are you nuts?

I don’t why we bothered to “kiss and make up”, those fucking cunts never do us any favours, despite your assertions.

It doesn’t do any harm what-so-ever to remind the snivelling Gallic wankers how they were slapped about and their correct place in any pecking order

:>)

Regarding waterloo....

Lord Uxbridge: By God, Sir. I've lost my leg.

Duke of Wellington: By God, Sir. So you have.

Oh and I have seen Lord Uxbridge's false leg

Re: The 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo
I like the quote by Wellington whilst at a ball in Vienna in 1814, apparently the French officers present all turned their backs on him. A woman present apologised to him for their rudeness to which he is said to have replied "I have seen their backs before Madam"

Ha ha ha, good old Nosey!
